Fabric API — Download the Minecraft Java Modding Library
Fabric API is a dependency of many Fabric-modes, not a plugin for Paper and not a separate downloader. Installed with Fabric Loader; JAR should fit your version of Minecraft.
Loading and compatibility
Install Fabric Loader, then select the official API release for the exact version of Minecraft. The library is suitable for the client and Fabric server; requirements depend on the build modes.

The API and Loader version numbers are not the same: they are different components.
Statistics and updates
What does Fabric API do?
The Fabric API contains common programming interfaces for mods running the Fabric bootloader. This is a library for developers: there will be no additional items or menus after it is installed.
Why Mods Need an API
Different modes must handle game events, register blocks, network packets, and other elements without conflict. The Fabric API combines some of these mechanisms into consistent interfaces. The authors of add-ons point it as a dependency, because without the appropriate modules, their code will not be able to load. This is a separate component from the Fabric Loader itself: installing a bootloader does not mean the presence of an API.
Compatibility of assembly
The Fabric version of the API must be Minecraft version, but the API release designation should not be confused with the bootloader number. In modpac, it is easy to get a situation where the Fabric itself starts and one of the mods reports a missing library. The error should be read literally: pick up the desired version of the API, not replace it with a random file.
A practical example
Before adding a large set of Fabric mods, make a list of the shared libraries needed for the selected releases. Install them in one set and check the world load. If several mods stopped running after the Minecraft update, check the availability of the corresponding Fabric API update and the dependencies of each mod.
