Minecraft Winter Drop: Ice Caves and the Sift Dimension
On Minecraft Live presented Winter drop with ice caves, new blocks, the effect of freezing and a special version of zombies. The developers also announced Sift, a fourth dimension that will be released in Java and Bedrock.

Minecraft developers have unveiled Winter Drop on Minecraft Live, the next major update to focus on cold, ice and underground adventure. Its central location will be the Ice Caves. According to the principle of generation, it is a new underground biome, comparable to the Lush and Karst caves, but almost entirely built on cold blocks.
In the Ice Caves, players will encounter dense ice with interspersed calcite, snow on the ground, ice crystals, stone, deep slate and various ores. The groundwater doesn't freeze here. Part of the passages will be illuminated with crystals, so they will be useful not only for the study of the biome, but also for the design of buildings. When Vibrant Visuals is turned on, a thick volumetric fog will appear in the caves.
In addition, new natural objects will appear in the update. One of them is generated in groups on the ceilings of the Ice Caves and falls if there is a light source nearby. Icicles can also collapse and cause damage to mobs. Another new source of light naturally occurs in caves and does not melt ordinary ice and icicles.
The danger in the cold tunnels will add the Frozen Zombie - a new version of the mob for the Ice Caves. He is able to fight both near and at a distance, imposing the effect of freezing on the player. For long-range attack, some such zombies use Ice Balls: the chance of a mob with this object in hand is 50%. When hit, the ball also imposes freezing.
The effect of freezing will gradually constrain the player. It can be obtained from a new zombie or through a potion created with the help of the Ice Ball. Protection from the effect will be at least one piece of leather armor. Therefore, in the expedition to the new biom will be useful not only the usual weapons, but also suitable equipment.
The main announcement of Minecraft Live was the dimension of Sift. It will be the fourth dimension of Minecraft after Overworld, Nether and End, and will be released in regular Minecraft for Java and Bedrock in 2027. Sift will have its own mobs. The first time to explore this world will be in Minecraft Dungeons II, which is announced for September 29, 2026. Details about the Winter drop and Sift developers will reveal later.
